Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)






General Information

TOEFL refers to the “Test Of English as a Foreign Language” and it is being administered by a non-profit organization named Educational Testing Service (ETS). It measures the ability of a person to utilize and understand the English language at the university level. It is a globally accepted test as over 8,500 colleges, and institutions in more than 130 countries accept the TOEFL scores.
The TOEFL test has two formats that include the TOEFL iBT Test and the Paper-based Test (PBT). The location that you choose for your test decides your test format. In some locations, TOEFL iBT Test is available while in others Paper-based Test (PBT) is there.

TOEFL test comprises of four sections that include:

  • Reading Section: In this section, the test-taker has to answer the questions after reading three or four passages from academic texts. It has approximately 36-56 questions with the time-limit of 60-80 minutes.
  • Listening Section: In this section, the test-taker has to answer the questions after listening the classroom discussions, lectures, and conversations. It has around 34-51 questions with the time-limit of 60-90 minutes. After this section, there is a break of 10 minutes.
  • Speaking Section: In this section, the candidate speaks on the basis of listening and reading tasks and expresses an opinion on a general topic. It involves six tasks with the time-limit of 20 minutes.
  • Writing Section: In this section, the candidate has to write an essay based on listening and reading tasks and supports an opinion in writing. It involves 2 tasks with the time-limit of 50 minutes.

Thus, the TOEFL test takes about four and a half hours in total to get complete.

Why there is a need of TOEFL test?

TOEFL measures how efficiently a candidate combine his/her reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills to carry out the academic tasks. It can be taken to get admission in higher educational institutes, to keep track of the English language skills, and to apply for VISA, or scholarships. It is taken worldwide by the candidates to avail the study opportunities in foreign countries.

Eligibility criteria for TOEFL

Anyone who has passed the class XII examination can take the TOEFL test. The level of the TOEFL test is quite high and thus, it is suggested to take the test after studying properly.

Fee structure for TOEFL

The fees for the TOEFL test vary by country. The registration fees for the TOEFL test in India is US $165. The late registration fee is US $35 and rescheduling fee is US $60. The test fees don’t include any Value-Added or other taxes.
The payment for the test can be made through Credit/Debit card, Electronic checks, Paypal account, registration vouchers, and paper check.

TOEFL Test Structure

There are four sections in TOEFL - Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The iBT version has a grade scale of 0-120. Each section is of equal weightage i.e 30.

Test Sections Explained

Reading 60 - 100 minutes 3-5 passages, each containing 12- 14 questions.
Listening 60 - 90 minutes 6-9 passages, each containing 5-6 questions.
Break 10 minutes
Speaking 20 minutes 6 tasks and 6 questions.
Writing 55 minutes 2 tasks and 2 questions.

TOEFL test is the very crucial test for the students who want to fulfill their dreams of studying abroad. Qualifying with good marks in the TOEFL test also adds benefit to the student’s career. Therefore, it must be essential for the students to take care of each and every minute detail regarding the test. Here’s a quick checklist with the help of which you do not forget the necessary things.

  • Print the TOEFL registration ticket before the exam day as it is compulsory to get it to the examination center.
  • You must also require to take your valid Photo ID proof along with you.
  • Visit the TOEFL test location and finalize how to reach there from your place of living. You should leave early to reach there on time.
  • Select the names of the universities where you want to get your score-report. For this, you need to log on to your ETS TOEFL account, and after logging in, click on “view orders” where you can select your choice of recipients.
  • Review the complete TOEFL course once again before the TOEFL exam, but if your exam is in the morning session, then, finish your revision by evening and sleep for 7-8 hours in the night. This will make your mind fresh and peaceful.
  • For the TOEFL iBT test, you must have the knowledge of computer and for TOEFL PBT test, you must bring at least 2 pen, 2 pencils, and eraser with you.
