International English Language Testing System (IELTS)






General Information

IELTS refers to the International English Language Testing System. It is a standardized English language test which is accepted globally. Three bodies, viz. the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations, IDP Education Pty Ltd, and the British Council jointly manage the IELTS. This unique system was established in 1989.
IELTS test is taken to evaluate the English language expertise of a person who wants to go abroad on study or work basis. IELTS is categorized into two versions that are:

  • General Training Version: It is for those who want to do secondary level study, training courses, and work in foreign countries.
  • Academic Version: It is for those candidates who register for the higher level courses in foreign universities or colleges.

Why there is a need for IELTS test? IELTS Test is important because it inspires candidates to learn well-rounded and accurate English. It enables the test-takers to understand the English language in a better way. The test materials are prepared vigilantly to maintain the level of the test. It has well-organized procedure of training, selection, and certification. There are several centers of IELTS all over the globe where candidates can take the test. Many Government departments and Private agencies use IELTS in one or another way to help students achieve their goals.

Eligibility criteria for IELTS

Anyone can give the IELTS test because there is no such eligibility criteria for this test. However, it is not suggested for students below 16 years of age.

Fee structure for IELTS

There is a specific fee structure for IELTS. Both the tests that include the Academic version test and General Training version test have the same fees. The registration fee for the IELTS test is INR 7900 till 31st August, 2012 and INR 8900 from 1st September, 2012.
You must enclose your test fee along with the IELTS Application Form for getting registered. The fees from students is used to maintain the security and quality of the test.

IELTS Test Structure

IELTS exam consists of four modules- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Candidate must complete all the modules.

Listening
Listening comprises of four sections. In the begining of each section, candidates are told of situations and the speakers.

Duration - 40 minutes.

Reading
Reading module has three sections. Candidates should read the given paragraph and answer the questions asked after every paragraph. There are altogether 40 questions in academic version of IELTS.

Duration - 60 minutes.

Writing
In writing module, there are two sections. In first section candidate has to explain some diagram, and in the second section candidte has to write paragraph on the given topic.

Duration - 60 minutes.

Speaking
Speaking module comprises three sections. In first section examiner ask candidate general question about hobbies, friends and family. In second section, candidate is given some topic to speak on it. Third section is about general question asked by examiner on the topic given to candidate in second section.

Duration - 10-14 minutes.

Band Scale

IELTS is scored on a nine-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specified competence in English.

Upcoming Dates for IELTS

As IELTS is divided into two versions, the Academic version test takes place 48 days in a year and General Training version test takes place 24 days in a year. These test dates are fixed but the dates may change with respect to the local demand.

The Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are usually available on Thursdays or Saturdays. You can give the Speaking test before or after 7 days of the these three tests but you can also give it on the same day.

Note: Other dates for the General Training test are applicable in Australia only and those dates are 28 July and 3 November.

Checklist Before Exam

For a test like IELTS, checklist plays a very important role . For the convenience of students who want to take the IELTS test, here is a checklist of things that you must do before your exam:

  • Listen to the English news channels and read the English newspaper daily.
  • Make use of the English dictionary and learn new words every day to increase your vocabulary.
  • Revise the lessons of Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections from the practice material provided by IELTS.
  • Don’t hesitate and speak English with your teachers, friends and family members.

  • Decide whether you want to give an Academic version test or the General Training version test. This can be done by confirming with your institution or organization.
  • Take the IELTS Application Form from your test center or alternatively, download it from here and print out the application form.

Now, your next job is to fill the application form accurately. For your reference, you can read the information for candidates document. After proper research and study, complete the form and don’t forget to write the same name as mentioned on your passport. Sign the form and submit it at your local IELTS test center along with the fees. You can submit it by visiting the center or by posting mail.
